Utilities Construction and General Construction Services

Knowledge and expertise

May Gurney has extensive water sector framework partnership knowledge and expertise in the delivery of bundled capital works to upgrade and improve infrastructure including assets such as pumping stations, reservoirs, treatment works, flood alleviation improvements, storm overflows, outfalls and other civil engineering works. These skills are also engaged to deliver general construction services locally for clients including the Environment Agency, local authorities and developers.

Integrated services

The key to the company's success has been offering integrated turnkey services that draw on the expertise and capability of the May Gurney group. Examples include the joint working with mechanical & electrical services teams on water and wastewater infrastructure, utilising HV electrical contracting services for wind farms, and delivery of steelwork fabrication for associated building structures.

May Gurney has a proven track record in the delivery of either major projects, or more typically the delivery of a series of medium sized projects of a similar nature within a framework such as:

  • Potable Water & Wastewater Treatment Plants and associated Process Buildings
  • Service Reservoirs
  • Strategic Pipelines and Short Sea Outfalls
  • Water and Waste Water Pumping Stations
  • Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs)
  • Storm Attenuation Tanks
  • First Time Sewerage

Design and construction

The team is renowned for working in framework partnerships that integrate design and construction capabilities either through in-house services, or in a joint alliance with consultant and specialist supply chain partners.

This collaborative approach ensures that clients are provided with the appropriate value engineered solutions while meeting their investment goals. May Gurney has developed a refined methodology that ensures that all the possible engineering options are considered, all the stakeholders to the project are consulted - including third parties such as the EA and the local community -and health & safety, quality, environmental and customer care are prioritised.

Industrial clients

May Gurney's expertise can support industrial clients to develop water and waste water solutions, utility network solutions and deliver turnkey construction infrastructure projects - in regions where the company has existing local resources, to offer a cost effective integrated service.

Innovation

The company has a reputation for innovation. Examples include:

  • Paignton CSO Attenuation Tanks - innovative design of temporary works enabled their use as permanent works, saving over £1m. This scheme achieved the Institution of Civil Engineers Award for Outstanding Civil Engineering.
  • Portishead Supply Strategy - additional construction and amendments to an existing structure saved the construction of a new screening chamber to a depth of 6m in very poor ground.
  • Weatherlees Hill Odour Control Building - design and construction of a 75m clear span portal frame building over four existing sewage settlement tanks. To avoid working over water the frame was constructed to the side and slid into position on purpose built rails.

Recent Awards

  • New Civil Engineer Contractor of the Year 2004
  • Considerate Constructors Scheme Gold Award for EA Flood Alleviation Scheme at Ottery St. Mary.
  • Excellence In Health & Safety Award for EA Downton FAS project.

These are only a few examples of the expertise and innovation available from May Gurney's dedicated construction management team and skilled site teams. The company continues to invest in the latest technologies and develop methodology to produce the best solutions for clients.

Its objective is to meet engineering requirements while driving down costs and achieving year on year savings. The company has long-term frameworks and alliance agreements throughout the UK, including offices and operations in Bodmin, Exeter, Yeovil, Wimborne, Aylesbury, Norwich, Manchester and Bristol.
