highway maintenance
May Gurney has extensive, in-depth experience and knowledge of all aspects of highway maintenance service delivery. The company combines in-house skills and resources with an innovative, open and flexible approach, to meet customers’ needs.

Much of its work is in the form of strategic partnerships with county council clients and the Highways Agency. For example, May Gurney currently maintains and improves highways in Norfolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire, East Sussex and West Sussex through long-term partnerships.

May Gurney Highway Services has specific strength in network asset management. The company provides an integrated delivery encompassing inspection, design and statutory duties, control of the client’s budget, and identification and development of improvement schemes.

Through full integration with its strong supply chain, Highway Services is able to provide a comprehensive range of reactive and routine maintenance services including winter service, emergency response and drainage, carriageway and footway surfacing, traffic calming schemes and verge and bridge maintenance.

Clients also benefit from May Gurney’s use of GPS and telematics in vehicles – to save on delivery time, reduce cost and enhance quality.

waste services
Our waste management team is dynamic and passionate, and consistently strives to provide exceptional customer service and best value.

We have been involved with the design and construction of landfill cells and associated engineering works for many years - working in partnership with local authorities, waste operators and the Environment Agency to fulfil a mutual responsibility to the environment and future generations.

But for some considerable while now - with the waste management sector changing rapidly - we've been working to develop new ways to deliver more appropriate waste solutions.

As a result, we now offer a full range of waste management services to local authorities including:

· Kerbside collection
· Bulky and clinical waste collections
· Bring sites
· Household waste recycling centres
· Transfer stations
· Composting facilities
· Material recovery facilities
· Residual waste treatment facilities

As a general principle, we prefer working with our customers in long-term partnerships - typically between five and 10 years - rather than on a shorter project/contract basis. That's because the non-adversarial approach we've developed is based on the merits of teamwork and collaborative working - and knowing that risk is most successfully mitigated when it is held by the parties best able to fully understand and therefore manage it.

We do not believe that PFI is working well for the waste industry. It's a 'big bang' approach that has the potential to deliver an inflexible long-term solution - entirely at odds with the needs of the waste sector.

Local authorities cannot afford to find themselves locked into massively expensive long-term PFI arrangements for facilities that no longer suit their changing requirements.

Instead, we offer a bespoke solution tailored to suit each customer's individual requirements and targeted to exceed their aspirations. Flexible solutions that can be delivered within a short procurement period, and that offer best value.

We also believe in open and honest financial disclosure. We are quite willing to share information about our overheads and the amount of profit we are seeking from a partnership contract. We are also happy to discuss a profit sharing agreement as an NEC3 form of contract, with additional profits divided between our customer and ourselves.

Finally, our waste management team works hand in hand with colleagues in other May Gurney business sectors to offer local authority customers a truly integrated range of waste management, construction, engineering and maintenance services.

surfacing
Building on over 50 years of experience in highway and footway surfacing and surface dressing – and supported by May Gurney’s products company Ayton Products – Highway Services can surface anything from a motorway to a cottage driveway, using a wide range of BS approved products.

The latest technology is employed to ensure best quality in terms of service and workmanship. A full range of asphalts, macadams and thin surfacings can be laid – to meet the increasingly stringent standards required by the Highways Agency, county councils, government departments and private customers.

A long-term commitment to R&D has resulted in the development of anti-skid, safety and decorative surfacing, and rapid repair solutions – through Fibredec, a reinforced surfacing to reduce road break-up, and Rhinopatch and Jetpatcher for rapid repair solutions.
