Innovative lighting in Redbridge

The challenge:
To replace old SOX lighting in order to improve the night time environment .

The solution:
Cartledge worked closely with the London Borough of Redbridge and Philips to install 275 new street lighting columns and lanterns utilising a system not previously used in Europe.

The new system comprises the Philips CosmoWhite 60 W lamp installed in a Philips Mini Milewide luminaire. This new generation of light provides a natural white light, which greatly enhances the environment. In addition, the dedicated CosmoR optic - the CosmoPolis system - is, in this case, around 30% more efficient than conventional solutions.

CosmoR optic allows optimal spacing and provides light exactly where it is needed, thus reducing light pollution. The implementation of the Philips Starsense Telemanagement System, which allows communication with each individual light point, further boosted savings.

The benefits include:
  • Enhanced ambience - the bright natural light creates an attractive ambiance.
  • Improved security - the good colour rendering helps with clear identification of peoples' faces, which gives a greater sense of security and safety.
  • Improved road safety - the bright white light improves off-axis/ peripheral vision, allowing detection of objects at off-axis angles.
  • Better spacing - the lights can be spaced up to 15% further apart, compared to a SON-T.
