Introducing 'Rent-a-Joiner' to speed up installation and reduce cost
The challenge:
To connect new street lighting installations to the electricity network in a more time and cost-efficient manner.
The solution:
Traditionally on a new lighting scheme the columns would first be installed and then connected by the local electricity supplier at a later date. This connection would be charged per installation.
The Rent-a-Jointer scheme - under which an EDF engineer is hired on a daily basis - speeds up connection and reduces costs. Cartledge manages the installations and takes the engineer to the columns that need to be connected.
The benefits include:
Lower cost. Typically EDF charges around £450 per new installation, while the cost per engineer day is £850. Therefore, if more than two installations are carried out per day, the cost per installation is reduced.
Less wasted time. Previously, on occasions there were delays in connecting new installations. Under Rent-a-Joiner, the work can be scheduled so that the columns are erected and the installation engineer follows on behind. Typically, switch on times have dropped from eight to four weeks.
Improved pedestrian access and safety. Installing columns means holes in the ground, which are hazardous to pedestrians. By having control over the electrical connections, Cartledge is able to install, connect columns and restore the footpath on one side of a street before completing the other. This gives better pedestrian and disabled access, and improved safety.
