recycling concrete columns

Recycling the concrete in street lighting columns

The challenge:
To provide an efficient, economical solution for the disposal of concrete columns.

The solution:
One of Cartledge's targets is to recycle 20% of its waste products and materials. With this in mind, the company constantly seeks to identify components that can be recycled.

After the electrical items are stripped out, the remaining materials in a street lighting column are primarily concrete reinforced with steel. The steel element has been recycled for some time, but the concrete traditionally went to landfill.

Now the column is crushed to form backfill, which is returned to Cartledge in one tonne bags - and used as deep fill when reinstating columns.

The benefits include:
  • A reduction in landfill waste.
  • A reduction in the amount of type 1 aggregate purchased.
  • A reduction in the use of finite resources from quarrying.
  • Returning waste in a reusable format to the environment from which it came.
