We’ve been working with the London Borough of Waltham Forest since 2004 and our current contract covers the management and operation of two Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRCs) until May 2012, with an optional eight-year extension.
What can you bring to the HWRCs?
Green garden waste, plastic bottles, paper, cardboard, drink cartons (tetra-paks), glass bottles and jars, rubble, tins and cans, car and household batteries, engine oil, mobile phones, metal, WEEE, bicycles, gas bottles, wood, cooking oil, foil and textiles.
Our service
We ensure that as much material as possible that enters the two HWRCs is diverted away from the residual waste stream.
At the outset we delivered immediate improvement by taking the recycling rate from below 25% (pre-contract start) to more than 50% in first month, maintaining that as a minimum level and rising to a current rate of 64%.
We stringently enforce a policy of no trade waste at the two sites, imposing an appointment system for vans and large vehicles, which has reduced the general waste figure by an average of 800 tonnes per month. The has generated savings in waste disposal costs in excess of £500,000 per annum.
All our sites have Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) systems to help us ensure that best practice is adhered to at the sites, and that malpractice is driven out. The CCTV also helps us control trade waste and deters theft.
It also supports our employees if they have to deal with confrontational members of the public, and enables us to investigate any comments concerning the sites and respond promptly and accurately.
As part of our commitment to continuously improve the service we provide to residents, in April 2009 we opened a new reuse centre. We promote reuse as a viable alternative to recycling and/or disposal; reuse is at the highest level of the waste hierarchy and has the best carbon footprint. The reuse centre operates as a professional establishment, employing specially trained staff and generating revenue as part of the contract. At the opening of the reuse centre we held an auction to raise money for the Sea Cadets, and a percentage of any profit from the centre is donated to local charities and community projects.
Cllr Bob Belam, Waltham Forest’s cabinet member for environment, said: “Our residents recycle as much of their rubbish as possible and this is reflected in the fact that we’ve got one of the best recycling rates in London. This is good news and is playing a big part in our bid to be the greenest borough in London.”
