We’ve been working in partnership with Norfolk County Council since 2007 and our current contract runs until 2014. Under the contract we operate and manage 19 household waste recycling centres (HWRCs).
What can you bring to the HWRCs?
Garden waste, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, timber, glass bottles and jars, mixed cans, mixed paper, cardboard, hard plastics, engine oil, cooking oil, household and automotive batteries, drink cartons (Tetra Pak), textiles, WEEE items, tyres, fridges and freezers, fluorescent tubes, energy saving light bulbs, tin foil, paint and books. We have also introduced facilities for recycling hard plastics at several of the sites.
Our service
We use portable on-site compactors to make more efficient use of the available space at our sites. A compactor accommodates more tonnage than an open container taking up the same area. This also reduces vehicle movements; for example we have reduced vehicle movements for transport of timber by approximately 55% and cardboard by up to 50%.
Using compactors also means fewer temporary site closures for servicing and consequently less disruption for our customers. In addition, we are reducing congestion on local roads and reducing the carbon footprint associated with the sites.
Our site staff are trained recycling advisors tasked with meeting and greeting the public and helping them to correctly sort their waste into the appropriate bank.
Reusable furniture brought to the HWRCs is set aside and collected by the Norfolk Homemakers charity, which sells the furniture to people on a low income or in receipt of benefits. A similar scheme is in operation at the HWRC at Caister, near Great Yarmouth, where the furniture is resold by Furnishaid, a charity that provides training for the long-term unemployed. We also have a designated re-use shop at our site in King’s Lynn which allows residents to come to the site to buy reusable items.
