We’ve been working in partnership with Essex County Council since 2009 and our contract runs until 2013, with possible extensions of up to two years. Under the contract we operate and manage 11 recycling centres for household waste (RCHW) in the south of the county.
What can you bring to the RCHWs?
General waste, garden waste, timber, cardboard, mixed paper, glass bottles and jars, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, WEEE items, TV monitors/CRTs, fridge/freezers, textiles/ shoes, fluorescent tubes, motor oil, cooking oil, household and automotive batteries, ceramics, hardcore, mixed cans/aerosols, tyres, gypsum/plasterboard, plastic bottles, printer cartridges and mobile phones, paint, books. Items that are identified as good quality such as bicycles are put to one side for collection by charities and furniture re-use organisations.
Our service
We focus on increasing the amount of materials that are recycled and eliminating trade waste abuse at the RCHWs.
As a result we have doubled the volume of textiles recycled and all RCHWs consistently achieve more than 55% recycling and composting, with an average rate of 62%. During the summer months many sites achieve recycling rates of up to 77%.
Our employees have been trained as ‘recycling advisors’ who ‘meet and greet’ the public and help them divert waste from landfill. They also offer physical assistance with manual handling, which helps maintain high levels of health and safety and reduces congestion.
In a recent survey 82% of visitors to our sites thought the staff were helpful, with residents commenting that the sites are ‘extremely user friendly’ and that ‘staff were extremely helpful and friendly’.
