We’ve been working with Ealing Council since 1997 and our current waste management and street cleansing contract runs until 2012.
What can you recycle?
The materials we collect are: glass, paper, cans, textiles, shoes, mixed plastics, cardboard, tin foil, Yellow Pages, car and household batteries, engine oil, garden waste and kitchen waste.
Our service
Ealing is a diverse community with a mix of inner urban and suburban areas and a population of more than 305,000 producing 120,000 tonnes of household waste annually.
We collect dry recycling and kitchen waste weekly from 93,500 households and collect refuse and a range of recyclable material from 19,000 high-rise properties. The service is one of the most comprehensive collection systems in the country. We sort recyclables at the kerbside and run a kerbside refuse collection service alongside the recycling service. Our low-rise collections occur on the same day, which is more convenient for residents and encourages maximum participation in recycling.
New services we have introduced include recycling collections from schools, adding Tetra Pak, and collecting recyclables from flats above shops. We plan to introduce card and plastic collections for high-rise properties and have reduced the number of missed collections to among the lowest of all London boroughs.
We also collect clinical waste, commercial waste and garden waste and manage and operate 65 ‘bring’ sites and three household waste and recycling centres (HWRCs).
Our street cleansing team has consistently exceeded the 90% Grade A performance target across Ealing. A recent ‘value for money’ review by the council, comparing cost and performance across six similar authorities, found that the cost of Ealing’s street cleansing service per capita was the lowest whilst achieving joint highest performance.
The improvements we have made in partnership with Ealing Council have minimised customer complaints and increased participation to give recycling rates of more than 35%. Recycling has increased by 42% and public approval for our refuse and street cleansing services is up by 31% and 15% respectively.
