Rebuild of Hutton Willowbrook Primary School commences

New school will create modern, eco-friendly learning environment

Earlier today (6/7/10), the much anticipated rebuild of Hutton Willowbrook Primary School in Brentwood began and will ultimately see a new school created providing a modern learning environment, complete with a community hall, pre-school area and an eco-friendly living roof.
May Gurney, the infrastructure support services company and contractor of this project will be responsible for the construction of the new school. The project is funded by Essex County Council at a cost of £5.5 million and will be completed in November 2011.

The new build will provide a modern learning environment for 210 pupils with seven new classrooms, kitchen, school hall, library, staffroom and administration facilities. The wider community will also benefit from the new community hall and pre-school area.

The building has been designed to be as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible. It will have a living, soil roof that will grow grass and other small plants over time. The water that runs off the roof will be collected by a specialised irrigation system and used for the school toilets.

The building project has also been reviewed by BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method), a leading environmental assessment method for buildings that helps reduce the environmental impact of buildings.

Dave Horkan, Head of Operations at May Gurney says, “May Gurney are delighted to be constructing this school. It will offer pupils and other members of the community an attractive, modern and environmentally friendly building that will no doubt become a real hub of the community in Brentwood.”

Commenting on the plans, Essex County Councillor Derrick Louis, Cabinet Member for Major Projects & Commercial Services said that the rebuild would create a superb new learning environment for students and teachers.

May Gurney is the lead contractor on the project with MACE providing project management. MLM Consultants is structural engineer providing below ground drainage design. The school has been designed by WPP architects
