May Gurney beats Vodafone to second place in European awards

May Gurney has beaten off competition from Vodafone to take the runners up spot in a prestigious European award.

The Norfolk-based / leading infrastructure services company was pipped at the post by UBS at this year’s European Shared Services and Outsourcing Excellence Awards, held last week, receiving an “honorary mention”.

Shared services is where functions which were previously undertaken in several parts of an organisation – such as finance or human resources – are brought together and streamlined into a company-wide service. May Gurney introduced shared services between November 2008 and February this year.

Philip Fellowes-Prynne, chief executive of May Gurney, said the company’s shared services project was “vital to May Gurney as we need to have efficient, cost effective and scalable systems providing information to our operational teams.

”We deliver essential maintenance and infrastructure services to clients across many sectors, including rail, highways, waterways and recycling services. To provide an efficient service to our clients, many of which are in the public sector, it is important that we operate an effective shared services team which all of our operational teams can access. The information provided by shared services plays a key role in helping us deliver excellent customer service.”

“We’re delighted to be competing with international household names, and it’s testament to the commitment and dedication of our staff who have made our system so successful.”

May Gurney was short-listed in the Best New Captive Service Delivery category alongside UBS and Vodafone.

The annual awards, which recognise and promote captive and outsourced shared services that demonstrate winning practices, form the industry’s benchmark for best practice and business excellence. Open to all captive and outsourced shared services organisations across the globe, the awards, which took place in Edinburgh last week, were judged by a panel of leading industry experts.
