Narrow escape for West Sussex gritter driver

A gritter driver was trapped in his vehicle for over three hours on Thursday evening when a tree bought down a live cable over his lorry in West Chiltington.

May Gurney employee, Mick Monger, had been gritting in West Sussex, ensuring the roads were as safe as possible for drivers in the freezing conditions. When treating the Monkmead Lane area, a nearby tree brought down a live overhead electric cable. Mick was trapped in his vehicle for three hours, enduring freezing temperatures, while help was called.

The power was quickly shut down by EDF Energy who removed the cable from the vehicle. Mr Monger said it was a very worrying time. But after his lucky escape, he was determined to finish his gritting round for the night: “I was keen to get going as I had the rest of my route to finish,” he said.

Richard Collins MBE, general manager for May Gurney, said: “We have been working closely with West Sussex County Council throughout the wintry snap to ensure major routes are kept open. Extra resources have been employed to grit hospitals, road junctions and other areas in conjunction with borough and district councils to keep the county moving.

“This is the coldest winter for 30 years and our crews have been deployed on 12 hour shifts to meet the unprecedented demand. Mick’s commitment to complete his route in very difficult circumstances is typical of the dedication of all our drivers.”
