MAD - Making A Difference
The objective of our MAD programme is to work out why we, as individuals, make the choices that we do. The programme provides our employees with techniques to identify aspects of behaviour that can put them or others at risk from harm. It teaches methods that can be used to encourage changing behaviours, leading to a reduction in the risk of harm.
MAD is based on understanding how the human mind works - how 'conscious' and 'unconscious' actions impact on behaviour.
While most people understand that human beings consciously take risks, it comes as a surprise to many to learn that we all spend a proportion of every hour in alpha sleep (on 'autopilot'). Everyone can probably think of occasions when time and circumstances passed them by - whilst driving, or watching television, for example.
MAD explains that most avoidable incidents occur when an individual consciously (deliberately) or unconsciously (while on autopilot) makes a decision.
The programme encourages and empowers people to do the right things by taking three simple actions:

The programme encourages and empowers people to do the right things by taking three simple actions:
· Take 10 - take time to think before acting.
· Lead by example - don’t take shortcuts yourself
· Walk over - address unsafe acts
A team of internal coaches have received training to deliver the programme. It is virtually paperless, technical and legal jargon-free and delivered in 15-20 minute briefing sessions.
The MAD programme is continually evolving and has recently included occupational health and environmental themes.
MAD is a positive change programme - helping employees understand risk and encouraging them to make the right choices. By involving and empowering employees, MAD has brought about a significant change in the culture of the organisation.
