New safety barrier

Parker Merchanting and Oxford Plastics

These two companies picked up the 2007 Supplier Integration Award for their work in partnership with May Gurney to develop an improved safety barrier for use at road works.

Despite being compliant with the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, the current excavation barrier has a fundamental weakness with the jointing system. The design works on short hooks and because of this does not accommodate changes in slope or level - such as a drop down from a kerb.

In partnership with Parker Merchanting and Oxford Plastics, we’ve developed a new design that incorporates an improved interlocking mechanism, and a facility for cross bracing to add strength.

To improve health and safety, the new barrier is also more substantial in cross section and has coloured feet to reduce trip hazards.

Our Highways and Utility Services businesses will benefit from this close collaboration with our supply chain - but more interesting is the benefit the improved barrier will bring to the wider construction industry.
