• 74.84 tonnes C02 per £m turnover

Increasing efficiency

This year we reduced our carbon emissions by 17.7%. This saving was achieved through focusing on our vehicle fleet – which accounts for 93% of our carbon footprint - complemented by a portfolio of CO2 reduction activities (like video-conferencing, cycle purchase plans and lift-share).

We are now working with our people and our clients to look more closely at how work is planned and scheduled, to deliver the next round of carbon reduction efficiencies.

Using renewable energy
We continue to explore renewable energy options for our fleet including trialling hybrid commercial vehicles and mixing regular and biofuels. The market has yet to offer effective alternatives to existing technologies at a scale significant enough to make a tangible impact. In the meantime, we maintain a watching brief on the market.

We have taken the decision to transfer our electricity supply to renewable sources, from 1 April 2010, across the Group.

Producing net carbon benefits
In combination with sensible approaches to fuel management, one of the most significant ways that we can reduce our overall carbon impact is to look at different ways of delivering our services.

For example, our Environmental Services business saved 110,832 tonnes  of CO2 (January to December 2009) through their household recycling activities for our long-term clients – more than three times  the total amount of CO2 we produce from our Group-wide operations.
