Holly Adams - Graduate Quantity Surveyor
Age: 24 years
Before May Gurney
After living for a few years in Belgium and America as a child I returned to Cambridge, England with my family to study my GCSEs and A-level. At sixth form I studied Media, French and History and when I finished my A levels I was unsure of what I wanted to study at university.

I moved to Manchester and began a degree in Media, French and Business in order to cover all interests but after a year I knew it was not something I wanted to pursue. After spending a few days shadowing a Quantity Surveyor over the summer I decided to change my degree to a BSc in Quantity Surveying. I loved the fact I was learning something completely different to anything I had done before and graduated last summer with a 1st.

While at university I spent one summer working with a Private Quantity Surveyor and while I learnt a lot I found it was quite office based and so decided to try and get a job with a contractor after graduating to enable me to get out and about.

May Gurney
I joined May Gurney in August 2010 and really enjoy working here. I have joined the British Waterways' contract as a Graduate Quantity Surveyor, which involves working with the team in Chorley and also the team in Hatton, and has allowed me to meet and be supported by a wide range of people. I have found that there is a great support network at May Gurney, something which I have found very important as what you learn on the job is completely different to what you learn in a lecture hall!

I have recently taken over the daily running of a CCTV Inspection Contract and have been given my first major works project at the docks in Liverpool. Along with these I help with the everyday running of other major works projects, working with the May Gurney project team, British Waterways and the subcontractors to deliver projects based in the north.

I love that the job allows me the opportunity to get out on site on a regular basis in order to learn more about each project. I feel this allows me to understand each project better, as you can see first hand what is going on.

Together with support from the team in the office, I have found that the Graduate Development Programme has helped me to develop my skills in other ways. I have been on several training courses already, ranging from May Gurney organised courses to external courses I have suggested and been supported to go on.

Outside of Work
Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my friends and boyfriend, going to the cinema and theatre as well as out in Manchester. I have recently started Boxercise and Zumba in Manchester which is pretty fun but tiring!
