Lindsay - Graduate (Utility Services)
Age: 23 years
Before May Gurney
I left Tapton Sixth Form in Sheffield in 2004 after completing my GCSEs and ‘A’ Levels and decided I wanted to further my education at university. (Well, actually, I didn’t have a clue what career path I wanted to take…)
I graduated from Royal Holloway University of London in 2007 with a 2:1 in Geography. I’ve always been interested in urban regeneration and how we construct the places that we live. Geography enabled me to gain a variety of skills and knowledge in various topics relevant to the modern world.
During my time at University I also worked in a clothes store and as a security supervisor (to make ends meet).
After leaving university I worked for Foxtons (estate agents) in London before deciding to pursue a career in which I could develop new skills and knowledge.
I applied for several graduate schemes within the construction industry as I felt this would be the best way to get into a new and dynamic industry. May Gurney has a very good graduate scheme that enables non-engineering graduates like me to develop.
At May Gurney
I joined the May Gurney graduate scheme in July 2008. As I am a non-cognate graduate (that is, I hold a non-engineering degree) I was asked if I would be interested in joining the Highway Services’ work-winning (tender) team for the first six months.
I was placed straight into a large tender submission with tasks including writing, sourcing evidence and editing - to prepare excellent answers for the bid. I also quickly learnt a great deal about May Gurney through various trips around the country to find out about the services we provide.
I am currently working in Utility Services for 12 months, in a shared role within the sustainability and work winning teams during the busy Amp 5 period (preparing bids for water contracts).
My brief is to understand, develop and communicate May Gurney’s sustainability proposition for Amp 5 bids; to contribute to developing and implementing a management system for May Gurney’s sustainability issues; preparing monthly reports to provide an overview of Utility Services’ sustainability activity; and externally reporting our carbon footprint to the Certified Emissions Measurement And Reduction Scheme (CEMARS). Sounds complicated, I know – but I love it!
Learning never seems to stop with May Gurney and the atmosphere within the company is exceptional; everyone is really friendly and there is a drive to achieve the best as a team.
Away from work
I like to keep active by playing korfball and netball, and going swimming and to the gym. It’s quite a lot of sport, but it makes me feel less guilty when I do what I enjoy most – socialising with friends!
