Mark - General construction apprentice
Age: 23 years
Before May Gurney
I attended Northgate High School in East Dereham, Norfolk. The subjects I enjoyed most were mainly electrical and computer based, including information technology and systems and control technology.
After leaving school I was working in general maintenance and thinking about a career change. May Gurney is well respected locally and I’d heard good comments about them, so I decided to send in my CV and see what would become of it. Luckily they replied and in due course I joined the company’s apprenticeship scheme.
At May Gurney
I started with May Gurney in September 2007 on a General Construction NVQ Level 2 Apprenticeship, based at the National Construction College (formerly CITB) at Bircham Newton in Norfolk.
I was at college until 27 June 2008 when I achieved qualifications in drainage, setting out, kerbing, confined spaces, shoring and much more besides. I then started on site with May Gurney a few days later as a general construction operative.
Since then I’ve been involved on many sites, some big and some small. I’ve learnt so much from my more experienced workmates and have been involved in kerbing, drainage, ditching, building road bases, excavation and re-instatements and other skills.
I love the physical work and working outdoors in different environments. I've worked in offices in the past and feel much better suited to what I’m doing now.
Away from work
Out of work my main interest is motorbikes, which have always taken up a lot of my time and will continue to do so. I aspire to do a lot of touring further afield one day, and hopefully my successful career with May Gurney will enable me to achieve this ambition.
