Ben - Technician
Age: 26 years
Before May Gurney
I left school with five GCSEs and went on to study A-Level in Business Management and left with a merit.
I then worked for one of the major high street banks for three years but couldn’t stand the fact that I was never able to really progress. It seemed they preferred to hold people back.
I then worked as a supervisor for a year with a company that fits heat pumps and underfloor heating (Better Planet), but didn’t like staying away from home quite a bit of the time - I missed my friends and family.
After speaking with the Quantity Surveyor (QS) at Better Planet, I decided to look into becoming a QS.
I found May Gurney on the internet and did some research to find out what they are like as a company. I liked what I read and applied for the position of technician, and was successful!
At May Gurney
I joined the company in June 2008.
The role I’m in gives me the flexibility to choose my own career path, with guidance from my superiors at May Gurney.
I was initially a supervisor in the Basildon area, overseeing gangs and helping the QS. I was then encouraged to move to Rochford, where I’m working directly with the QS helping with things ranging from site measures to dealing with subcontractors invoices, and attending meetings.
I have been assigned to work all emergency callouts in the area, and am taking the lead in making payments to subcontractors. I am also keeping a daily diary of a scheme of work over £35k; I enjoy trying to make as much profit as possible for the company, and am working hard to add to the financial success of the Rochford Depot.
I particularly enjoy site measures - getting out of the office to determine what work has been done and working out what the client owes.
As a company, May Gurney looks after you - it cares about developing people into who they want to be, not just what suits the company. They have given me great support and have made sure that I haven’t felt lost, unwanted or forgotten.
Away from work
I love football and play semi professionally for Great Wakering Rovers; I hope to take it as far as I can. I also enjoy watching my brother when I get time - he plays professionally for Aldershot FC in League Two.
The rest of the time I’m just relaxing with my girlfriend and mates. I enjoy any kind of travelling and holidays and can see myself working abroad in the future - hopefully May Gurney will win some contracts in a nice hot country. Now that would be ideal!
