Spectacular environmental awards success
May Gurney Utility Services enjoyed spectacular success at two prestigious environmental awards events held within four days of each other.
First, the Team Van Oord partnership - May Gurney, Van Oord and Mackley - was a triple winner in the prestigious 2006 Environment Agency Project Excellence Awards.
Team Van Oord won two of the four award categories- and then received the ultimate accolade of Overall Winner.
The Project Excellence Awards recognise the contributions of the whole
project team - framework suppliers and the Environment Agencyıs internal
staff. 48 projects across England and Wales were put forward for the 2006
awards.

Judging took place on 31 October 2006, with the 12 short listed project teams making detailed presentations to the judging panel.
Team Van Oordıs first success was in the Management of Health, Safety and Environmental Risk category. The winning scheme was the £2.95m Greylake
Sluice improvement project, near Bridgewater, Somerset.
The partnership's other win was in the Sustainable Construction and
Environmental Enhancement category. This time the winning scheme was the £6.5m Fordingbridge Flood Defence Scheme in Hampshire (see pic above) - a system of flood defences on the River Avon, Ashford Water and Allen Brook to protect 450 homes.
The judging panel commented: "We were particularly impressed by the highly professional approach to delivering projects effectively and efficiently,
which was evident throughout, together with the passionate commitment to integrated team working, making peoples lives better and improving the environment."
The awards will be formally presented to Team Van Oord on 5 December.
Just four days later, May Gurney picked up top prize at the Green Apple Awards, which were presented by the broadcaster and environmental campaigner, David Bellamy, at the Tower of London on 3 November.
May Gurney was named Best Practices Overall Champion for Building & Construction for a project in Cornwall undertaken on behalf of South West Water (SWW).
The project - to upgrade 10km of underground water mains in the village of Marazion in Cornwall - also won the Green Apple commerce and industry category. The work was carried out under a £50m investment programme to improve water quality for SWW customers in the south west of England.
The Green Apple Awards is an annual international campaign to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world. The awards are promoted by The Green Organization with the support of the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institute of Waste Management, Municipal Journal and other environmental bodies.
Sections of the mains network run underneath Marazion Marshes, an Environmental Special Protection Area and a 50-hectare RSPB reserve. "The key to our success on this scheme was the meticulous approach to planning, combined with the early participation of all the environmental stakeholders and their active involvement when considering the approach to be taken," said Tim Read, Managing Director, May Gurney Utility Services.
Earlier this year this project also received the United Kingdom Society of Trenchless Technology (UKSTT) Award for the best small pipeline rehabilitation project undertaken in the UK in 2005.
