Long-term approval in Scotland

Having organically grown its gas networks business from a zero base to £14m per annum in just three years, May Gurney Utility Services has secured approval status to work for the UK's second largest gas utility company - Scotia Gas Networks.

May Gurney currently works with National Grid Gas in the north west, but new gas network companies have emerged from the sale of regional networks by National Grid in mid-2005. One of these is Scotia Gas Networks, which is owned by a consortium that includes Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE plc). Scotia Gas Networks owns and operates 24,000 km of gas networks in Scotland and 49,000 km along the south coast and south east of England.

Tim Read, Utility Services Managing Director, comments: "We have had to wait for the dust to settle following the sale of large parts of National Grid gas networks, with many new companies simply extended their existing framework arrangements - but we have always has one eye on controlled regional growth that compliments our business plan.

"It is excellent to build on our experience gained working in one of the four retained areas with National Grid Gas, but strategically it is important for us to have a diverse range of clients in this sector, and Scotia Gas can now be one of them."

Although no workload had been secured or undertaken on the ground yet, May Gurney has achieved approved framework status for works in Scotland, which allows the company to bid for projects under the umbrella framework now in place.

Tim Read concluded: "Following our commitment in recent years, it's a natural step for the gas sector to recognise May Gurney as an innovative gas network maintenance and rehabilitation contractor. We look forward to helping Scotia Gas with its long-term replacement programme in Scotland for many years to come. This potential growth sits well alongside pipeline rehabilitation activities we are currently undertaking for Scottish Water Contracting in the same region."
