North Wales portfolio expands

May Gurney's portfolio of work in North Wales is expanding impressively, with four projects completed in the past 12 months and another £1m contract recently awarded.

All these projects are being carried out for the Environment Agency Wales as part of the Team Van Oord framework.

Between April and July 2005, Utility Services completed a £780,000 project at Bala Gauging Station, which involved temporarily diverting a river to allow construction of a new reinforced concrete weir.

A project on the River Alyn at Mold followed, which involved the construction of flood defences comprising earthwork embankments between July - October 2005.

Work on the reconstruction of two tidal sluice valve chambers at Penllyn Marshes commenced in September 2005 and was completed in January of this year.

And an £800,000 beach protection and tidal gate replacement project at Abererch commenced in Nov 2005 and completed to programme - and slightly under budget - in February 2006.

Under the scheme, dilapidated tidal doors that control outfall of the River Erch were replaced, and a sheet piled wall was installed along the shoreline at the base of sand dunes between Pwllheli and Abererch. These works will prevent, or at least restrict, further dune loss to tidal erosion - thereby protecting the railway and farmland immediately behind.

The most recent commission is at Rossett where a £1m flood alleviation scheme has been awarded, and the project team has mobilised to site.
