Dual short listing for National Grid gas project

May Gurney's work in Chester for National Grid has made the short list for two important industry awards.

May Gurney is working with National Grid to make Chester one of the first cities in the UK with an 'all plastic' network of medium pressure gas mains.

Nearly 9km of new mains are being laid at a cost of £2.6m. The new mains are of a larger diameter than the existing mains, which will increase the capacity of the local gas supply network. The new pipes will be made of durable polyethylene, which will have a life span of around 80 years.

One of the major challenges was to replace a length of main that runs across the historic Victorian Grosvenor Bridge across the River Dee.

It is May Gurney's innovative 'trenchless' solution to this challenge that has resulted in the two short listings - the first of which is for the UK Society of Trenchless Technology (UKSTT) Awards, Small New Installation Project category.

The second short listing is for the Gas Awards 2007, Customer Service category. The awards lunch will take place at the Hilton, Park Lane, London on 8 May.
