Safety record hits new high

May Gurney Utility Services' operations in north-west England has clocked-up a remarkable 1.25 million man-hours without a reportable accident - a tremendous safety achievement.

May Gurney, one of National Grid Gas's six term contractors, has achieved 500,000 man-hours without a lost time injury in the area. In addition, the company's Manchester-based mechanical and electrical team has also achieved a zero AFR (Accident Frequency Rate).

Mike Stott, Director of SHE at May Gurney said: "This is a remarkable achievement and testimony to the importance that all of our employees place on safety. We are at the forefront of the very latest safety approaches, and our revolutionary behavioural safety programme (MAD) has recently been rolled out to all of our 3,450 employees across the UK."

Within May Gurney, health and safety is controlled using the competence of all operatives as the principal tool. Monthly discussions are held with all teams to discuss safety and environmental matters, with a newsletter reinforcing both the good and bad points.

Nationally, May Gurney is involved in the monthly National Grid Gas contract partner safety meetings, where incidents and lessons learnt from the gas industry are discussed with all contractors. The company also participates in quarterly open safety forums with representatives from the HSE, utility companies and other construction customers including Network Rail, the EA and the petrochemical industries - all of whom are keen to promote safety awareness in their sectors.
