Excellent service delivery yields three-year framework

Excellent service yields three-year framework

By responding to an approach from the client to provide services not previously offered, May Gurney Utility Services has secured a new three-year framework with Western Power Distribution (WPD).

Disappointed by what was on offer from other contractors in the south west region, WPD sounded out May Gurney about the possibility of providing a low voltage pole erection service.

"Our reputation for excellent service delivery on a recent underground cabling contract seems to have landed us this framework," says Tim Read, Utility Services Managing Director. "Western Power actively encouraged our local management team to take a look at providing this new service.

"It makes a welcome change for a customer to recognise our framework partnering skills and encourage us to meet their outsourcing needs, rather than us having to chase the business."

The initial award covered Cornwall, but this has already been extended to include projects in Plymouth, Devon. Asset renewal - including the planned replacement of 'D' poles due to gradual decay - will form the core of the contract.

To service the framework, May Gurney's Plant & Transport department has provided a specially designed 12.5 tonne Hiab lorry to transport and erect poles in the highway and for off road field work.

Operational crews have undertaken specialist training at WPD's training centre, to achieve the required competency for authorization to erect electricity distribution poles to the required technical specification and safety standards.
