ICE award for Rail Services

May Gurney and Network Rail were honoured at the 2006 Historic Bridge and Infrastructure Awards, which were held at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in London on16 November.

Representatives from May Gurney and Network Rail were presented with the award by Mr Quentin Leiper, President of ICE, for their work on the Fossdyke Railway Embankment Protection Project.

The award was presented 'to recognise and encourage excellence and innovation in conservation, and in recognition of the exceptional skill and care applied to the design and execution of the project'.

The railway embankment earthworks - on the Spalding to Doncaster route in Lincolnshire - repaired severe erosion to the embankment immediately adjacent to the Fossdyke canal, which was built in Roman times.

"This award acknowledges the exceptional service we are continually striving to deliver to our customers."

Steve Jagger

May Gurney delivered the specially designed, innovative and environmentally friendly embankment repair scheme using natural materials, including pre-planted coir rolls and pallets, which were supplied by Salix River and Wetland Services Ltd.

The works were completed as part of the LNE (London & North East) Civils Framework.

Steve Jagger, Managing Director of Engineering and Project Services, said: "This award acknowledges the exceptional service we are continually striving to deliver to our customers. The innovative skills of the whole team resulted in an excellent environmentally friendly solution. It is especially nice for the scheme to be acknowledged in this way by industry experts - I congratulate everyone involved on a first-class job."
