High Level Bridge extension secured

May Gurney has been awarded a £19m contract by Network Rail for more maintenance works at the High Level Bridge, Newcastle.

The contract means that May Gurney will complete the complex refurbishment works it started at the bridge back in 1999.

Steve Jagger, May Gurney's Engineering and Project Services Managing Director, said: "This contract extension, on such a flagship project, is great news and an indication of the on-going confidence the client has in May Gurney. Many of the team have worked there for a number of years, and take great pride in their involvement in renovating this historic, Grade 1 listed structure."

The bridge, which was built in the late 1840s, has stood the test of time well - but is now beginning to suffer from corrosion and fatigue damage. Work to date has included a detailed study of the structure including unique testing of the cast iron parts of the bridge, as well as renovation of some of the cast and wrought iron elements.

"This contract extension is great news and an indication of the confidence the client has in May Gurney."

This further phase of work has come about as a result of investigations by consultants Mott MacDonald, which showed that further works are required to the overbeams, facias, wrought iron hangers, tie chains and road deck. The bridge will also be grit blasted and repainted before being reopened to traffic.
