Bridge revamp gets seal of approval

A May Gurney project for Network Rail to restore a piece of Nottingham's railway history has gained recognition from the city's Civic Society.

The £400,000 investment to restore an Edwardian footbridge has won Nottingham Civic Society's 'Mark of the Month' award, which recognises projects of architectural and environmental merit.

The footbridge, which is over 100 years old and dates from the 19th Century, sits next to Lincoln Street level crossing at Basford, Nottingham.

The bridge was closed on safety grounds in 2005 and in June 2006 it was transported to the works of Lanarkshire Welding Ltd at Wishaw in Scotland, where it was restored and repainted by specialist steel workers.

May Gurney oversaw the bridge's removal and reinstatement on site, and added additional safety features including anti-vandal mesh to the parapets and non-slip coating to the walking surfaces.

Once returned it to its former glory, the bridge reopened during August 2006.
