Rail contract provides variety of challenges
May Gurney Rail Services continues to deliver a number of projects within the BRB contract, which May Gurney has held for the past three years.
The contract delivers the maintenance and repair of redundant railway structures to ensure they remain in a safe condition, on behalf of BRB (Residuary) Ltd.
Russell Adams, Managing Director, Rail Services, said: "The work May Gurney routinely performs within this contract falls principally into three categories - bridge demolition, bridge infill and bridge repair.
"One project that bucked this trend was at Canning Town in London, within sight of the Dome. Our team here worked with specialist contractors on a two-week project to replace the timber protection around the bridge piers of a redundant rail structure spanning a tributary of the Thames. The timber 'casing' prevents the piers from being damaged by passing river traffic - barges and boats."
The project was designed by May Gurney and the works were carried out from a river barge commencing in mid-August.
Further east, a team demolished an unsafe, three-arch road bridge in Essendine, near Peterborough. Additional works at the site included infilling the void created by the demolition works to the existing carriageway level and then re-profiling the road to improve sight lines for drivers.
The project commenced in August and is expected to conclude before the end of the summer holidays, as the road is a key route to local schools.
In the south, at Verwood in the New Forest, a Rail Services team has just completed work to strengthen a former rail overbridge. Stone infill material, which was used to fill the void beneath the bridge, was taken to the site via a haul road constructed by May Gurney across a local farmer's field.
The project was delivered in just two weeks, a significant improvement on the five weeks allowed for in the programme.
"The project delivery team continues to work diligently to deliver the variety of projects that fall within the remit of this contract," Russell Adams concluded.
