Environmental awards success

May Gurney's Environmental Manager, Craig O'Brien, won the Individual Contribution Award at the 2006 Network Rail Environmental Awards, which were presented on 12 July at the Natural History Museum in London.

Craig received his award from TV presenter, Philippa Foresster, and Yvonne Constance, a Network Rail Non-Executive Director. Phillipa commended Craig for the 'zeal' with which he undertakes his role and described him as the 'quintessential eco-warrior'.

Russell Adams, Rail Services Managing Director, said: "Craig is a dedicated member of staff, and passionate about the environment. The contribution he has made to our sector since joining three years ago is outstanding. He has been responsible for the implementation of stringent environmental policies and promulgates environmental awareness and responsibility to his colleagues throughout the company."

May Gurney was also highly praised for its two entries for the Biodiversity Protection Award. These were the creation of a Riffle Bed on the River Rother, and Morton's Leam Bridge renovation. For this award, Network Rail was seeking 'to recognise the commitment by an organisation or individual towards ensuring that protected habitats and/or species are preserved alongside the safe and efficient operation of the railway'.

The two projects were delivered within the LNE Civils Framework Contract, and Craig acted in consultation with both project delivery teams.
