May Gurney has made an excellent start on this important contract, and the project was completed to the client's satisfaction
Reactive earthworks team excels
May Gurney Rail Services has successfully completed its first job under the Western Territory Reactive Earthworks contract for Network Rail - remedying an embankment slip at Lockleaze, Bristol.
May Gurney and designer C L Associates proposed a two-stage solution to remove a 150 tonne overhang, which extended over an eight-metre length.
Stage one was to extend the height of the existing gabion wall by one basket. The slipped material was then to be removed using a long reach excavator, and granular material laid over the face.
The proposal was hampered, though, by overhead cables leading to a safety requirement for all plant to be limited to seven metres in height.
When the works commenced, however, the slip had significantly deteriorated and an urgent meeting was convened with the client and designer. Due to the threat of further slippage, a line speed restriction was immediately imposed and an urgent nighttime possession quickly arranged.
Using a 90 tonne long-reach excavator with a seven metre restrictor in place, the May Gurney team successfully removed the slipped material in one night to make the area safe. The following morning Network Rail was able to lift the line speed restriction and thanked May Gurney for its efforts.
Revised proposals were urgently developed and agreed, and then carried out over an extended 40-metre length. The works included the installation of ground anchors, extending both the length and height of the gabion wall (to 3 gabion baskets high), the installation of shear keys and drainage (counter forts) in the embankment face, with deep drainage running along the crest. Overall six drains were replaced and a further five installed.
The task was to remove a 150 tonne overhang, which extended over an eight-mere length
Russell Adams, Managing Director, Rail Services, said: "I am very pleased at the great start we have made on this important contract and understand that the project was completed to the client's satisfaction.
"We now have a further seven active sites within this framework which I know the team will deliver with equal diligence."
