Embankment project attracts interest

A sensitive project being carried out in Lincolnshire by May Gurney Rail Services is attracting considerable interest from the rail industry and environmental groups.

The five-month project, to repair part of the embankment between the railway and Foss Dyke Canal, forms part of Network Rail's LNE Territory Structures and Earthworks Framework Contract.

The work is being carried out by May Gurney in partnership with Salix River & Wetland Services, a local company specializing in wetland and river services.

The embankment has suffered from significant erosion over the years, and Rail Services' challenge is to restore and strengthen the banking, while taking into account the potential for wildlife in the area.

Planned works include removal of trees and vegetation, installation of materials behind sheet piles to reinforce railway embankment, and the installation of brushwood faggots to prevent future water erosion.

Embankment project attracts interest Coir fibre will be used to top the repaired bank. Coir is the ideal material for erosion control as it has excellent properties for rhizome and root establishment, and is completely sustainable. The fibre degrades over a period of 4-5 years, depending on site conditions, and provides temporary protection against erosion while vegetation establishes.

The solution provides an almost instant habitat to enable local flora and fauna to re-establish.
