Life's a Beach

Inspired by an article about the Marine Conservation Society, the central BISHE team had a day at the seaside on 27 June helping to keep Britain's beaches clean.

It was not only a chance to make a little bit of the coast that bit more pleasant to visit - it also proved an insight into what is floating on the oceans of the world, as well as left by visitors to beaches....

More than one mile of beach to the west of Sheringham on the North Norfolk coast was cleared, with a formidable stack of predominantly plastic rubbish collected. The most unusual find was a tent.

It was decided not to use the food found on the beach for lunch (an onion, some garlic, a leek, carrots) but driftwood was used to light the kelly kettle to brew the tea. It was thought to be the first time that the BISHE team brief had been delivered on a beach.

The BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) kindly set the day up and provided support.
