European funded scheme - on time and under budget challenge

The Norfolk Strategic Partnership (NSP) between Norfolk County Council, May Gurney and Mott MacDonald is currently working on a project to enhance an historic area in Norwich city centre.

The project comprises footway widening and re-paving, speed table construction, minor drainage works and resurfacing, in an area around Norwich City Hall. 80mm thick 'Haslingdon' Yorkstone from a quarry in Keighley, Yorkshire is being used to re-pave the area. The works also inlcude complex steps, ramps and walls, and bespoke street lighting and street furniture.

The challenge is to complete the work within the strict timetable dictated by European grant bodies, and within budget - at the height of the tourist season and under the close scrutiny of Norwich City Council officers and members. A tall order - successfully achieved to date.

The scheme is being funded by the European Community and delivered by the NSP for Norwich City Council. The project will run for 20 weeks and is worth just under £1m.

The Norfolk Strategic Partnership was one of the first public/private sector partnerships formed to deliver public services. The 10-year partnership delivers planning and transportation services across Norfolk, including roads, bridges, passenger transport, waste, environment and planning.

The Partnership's success at delivering transport schemes has been rewarded with Centre of Excellence status by the Government, focussing on 'Road Safety and Public Transport in Rural/Urban Areas'.
