Public Private Partnership - 100% RIDDOR free
May Gurney employees working as part of the Norfolk Strategic Partnership (NSP) have completed more than three years without a RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) incident - a remarkable achievement.
This equates to around 850,000 RIDDOR-free hours of work since the Partnership was formed in April 2004. NSP's 'near-miss culture' is being cited as a major contributory factor, with more than 400 near misses reported annually.
"The NSP record is a tremendous achievement given that the work revolves around small self supervising gangs, and is due in no small part to the high near miss reporting rate," says Mike Stott, May Gurney's Safety Health and Environment Director.
"Near miss reporting has major benefits - it shows we welcome information about safety, which makes people feel much more comfortable asking questions. We can then act on information received to close out any potential incidents before they have a chance to evolve into an accident."
When it was formed in April 2004, the Norfolk Strategic Partnership between Norfolk County Council, May Gurney and Mott Macdonald was one of the first public/private sector partnerships formed to deliver public services.

The 10-year partnership delivers planning and transportation services across Norfolk, including roads, bridges, passenger transport, waste, environment and planning.
May Gurney's innovative behavioural safety programme, MAD (Making a Difference), is being credited with a spectacular improvement in safety performance across the company. During 2006, the company's overall AFR fell from 0.43 at the outset to 0.24 at the close - and the 2007 year to date figure has dipped further to 0.19.
On the back of May Gurney's success with MAD, Norfolk County Council has recently agreed to adopt the programme for its Planning and Transportation Department. May Gurney staff working in the NSP will work hand in hand with their council colleagues to assist with implementing the MAD programme.
