Innovative design wins award

May Gurney and the two other members of Norfolk County Council's Strategic Partnership enjoyed success in the 2006 Street Design Awards - for the 'innovative design' of recently completed works on Great Yarmouth seafront.

The Street Design Awards are organised by Local Government News (LGN) and contested in seven categories.

The Norfolk Strategic Partnership won the Highways category award for traffic calming and environmental improvements carried out under Phase One of the inteGREAT highway works in Great Yarmouth.

David Wardale, Norfolk County Council's Design Project Manager for the scheme, received the award on behalf of the Partnership, which comprises Norfolk County Council, Mott MacDonald and May Gurney.

May Gurney constructed a pedestrian link between the seafront and town centre, including a feature paving oval ring and a large public space. Cartledge, May Gurney's street lighting specialist company, also installed new lighting as part of the project.

John Longhurst, the County Council's Head of Highway Operational Services said: "It has been a pleasure to work with the other organisations on the inteGREAT project.

"The partnership working and early contractor involvement has enabled this complex project to be delivered on time and within budget. It was a demanding challenge (not least working through the winter), but thanks to the hard work of all involved, ultimately very rewarding, and we all look forward to starting Phase Two."

The next phase will start after the summer season, with work scheduled to be completed by summer 2007.
