Great Yarmouth's Golden Mile is being transformed

Celebration marks seafront transformation

Completion of the latest stage in the transformation of Great Yarmouth's Golden Mile was marked by a civic procession including a marching band, horse-drawn landaus, road trains and children from two local schools.

Great Yarmouth Borough Council's £2.5m seafront improvement adds to the award-winning work carried out by the InteGreat partnership. The work has been carried out by Norfolk County Council's Strategic Partnership, led May Gurney.

The latest phase of work includes: a new segregated lane for horse-drawn landaus, as well as a land train and bicycles; a newly-paved, broad pedestrian walkway alongside the slow lane; a revised road layout for cars, with a newly-completed high quality surface; new lighting; high-quality surfacing on the esplanade, and attractive new seats.

Phase one of the InteGreat project enjoyed success in the 2006 Street Design Awards. The project won the Highways category, for traffic calming and environmental improvements carried out while constructing a pedestrian link between the seafront and town centre.
