A21 receives dual awards

The A21 Lamberhurst bypass scheme in Kent has achieved silver standard in the 2006 Considerate Constructors Awards - and attained the Brassey Award 2006 from the Institute of Civil Engineering South East England Kent & East Sussex Branch.

Considerate Constructors is a national scheme created by the construction industry to improve its image. The award was presented at Gibson Hall in London on 30 March.

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is a charity that exists to promote and progress civil engineering. The Kent & East Sussex Annual Dinner and Brassey Awards were held at Leeds Castle in the Henry VIII banqueting hall.

The Lamberhurst Bypass comprises 2.5km of dual carriageway and 0.7km of single carriageway. The outstanding feature of the contract is a land bridge at Scotney Castle, which was designed and constructed in co-operation with the National Trust. The bridge looks like part of the landscape and restricts views of the new road when accessing the castle.

Jaco Burger, May Gurney's Operations Manager, said: "Nigel Steer and his team have shown exemplary consideration to the local community and travelling public throughout this challenging project. This award recognises the efforts of the site team and is the benchmark for others to follow."
