Integration in action

A combined team from five parts of May Gurney has worked together to successfully deliver a £2.4m embankment stabilisation project on the East Coast Main Line for Network Rail.

The work took place at Potters Bar in Hertfordshire as part of the LNE Civils Framework Contract that May Gurney has held since 1997.

Steve Jagger, Managing Director, Engineering and Project Services commented: "The scheme is an excellent example of integration from across May Gurney. Representatives from our design, piling, civils, fencing and rail teams combined their expertise to provide a complete solution for Network Rail."

The project was managed by Rail Services, with the design produced by the company's in-house design team.

The installation of more than 1100 CFA (Continuous Flight Auger) piles, which provided the foundation for a 660m reinforced concrete wall, was carried out by the Geotechnical team. Civil Engineering then carried out construction of a 660m capping beam and retaining wall, and installation of gabion baskets.

"The scheme is an excellent example of integration from across May Gurney."

Finally, the Fencing team is in the process of completing fencing work on site, and a replanting scheme for the embankment has been agreed with the Environment Agency.

Another obstacle overcome by the project team was the humane capture and temporary re-housing of more than 30 slow worms (a protected species) while the work took place.
