National award for bypass
The A21 Lamberhurst bypass scheme achieved silver standard in the 2006
Considerate Constructors Awards, which were presented at various locations
across the country between 20-30 March.
May Gurney received its award at Gibson Hall, London, on
Thursday 30 March.
The Considerate Constructors Scheme is a national scheme created by the
construction industry to improve its image. In all, 296 schemes were
recognised in the 2006 awards. For further information about the scheme click here
The Lamberhurst Bypass in Kent comprises 2.5km of dual carriageway and 0.7km
of single carriageway. Work commenced in June 2003 and was completed in
April 2005, bringing relief to Lamberhurst residents and traffic using the
A21.
The outstanding feature of the contract is a land bridge at Scotney Castle,
which was designed and constructed in co-operation with the National Trust.
The bridge looks like part of the landscape and restricts views of the new
road when accessing the castle. In total, some 50,000 trees and bushes were
planted on the site.
In making the award, the judges commented as follows:
"Because of the nature of the project, full time public liaison and
environmental managers were appointed.
"All trees adjacent to the route were protected while special precautions
were taken to protect and relocate bats, badgers, newts and snakes. Waste
was segregated and recycled wherever possible, while procedures were
established for monitoring the quality and disposal of ground water.
"Full time road sweepers kept all roads in the area free of mud, and Japanese
knotweed was properly disposed of.
"Noise monitoring was in place and noisy work was avoided when funerals were
held at the nearby church. Regular meetings were held with local residents,
parish council meetings were attended, regular newsletters issued, visits by
the local school arranged, and a donation made towards the village Christmas
lights."
Jaco Burger, May Gurney's Operations Manager, said: "Nigel Steer and his
team have shown exemplary consideration to the local community and
travelling public throughout this challenging project. This award recognises
the efforts of the site team and is the benchmark for others to follow."
