Footbridge makes Wherryman's Way safe again

May Gurney has recently completed construction of a new footbridge that forms part of Wherryman's Way footpath at Hardley Flood on the River Chet in Norfolk.

The project - to replace an old footbridge that had virtually collapsed and become unsafe - was commissioned by Norfolk County Council and completed on 21 December 2005.

New abutments were constructed with timber sheet piling and steel column foundations for the bridge. Due to the location of the site all plant and materials were delivered by water, using May Gurney's tugs, barges and a crawler crane mounted on uniflotes.

Work originally commenced earlier in 2005, but had to be abandoned due to excessive flooding and erosion in the area.

The River Chet forms part of the Norfolk Broads, an area famed for boating holidays. As the river had to be closed while the work was carried out, the project was scheduled for the quiet season.
