Good news on several fronts

The East Sussex Highways partnership has joined a scheme that urges contractors to be more caring towards the needs of businesses, site personnel, visitors and the travelling public.

The 'Considerate Contractors' scheme also demands cleaner sites and equipment, with better signs advising people about what is happening. Companies operating within East Sussex are also being challenged by the county council to keep noise and dust to a minimum at all times.

The scheme is monitored and regulated by inspectors who consider the site environment, site safety and the impact of the site on the local community. Marks will be awarded, with top performers receiving a special Gold Award.

East Sussex Highways was formed in September 2005 to deliver all road maintenance and new construction work on East Sussex County Council's highways - including road safety, traffic calming, surfacing, surface dressing, white lining and winter gritting.

Councillor Matthew Lock, East Sussex County Council's Lead Member for Transport & Environment, said: "Unfortunately, digging up the roads to get to pipes and wires is something that we do have to put up with. But, I'm sure most people agree that navigating noisy, dusty and badly signed roadworks site can be really intimidating. We want all contractors working on the roads of East Sussex to take greater care and be more considerate while they do this, which is why we have launched this scheme."
