Co-location will improve communications and integration

The 110 members of the East Sussex Highways 'western' team have moved into new offices at the partnership's depot in Ringmer. The move will improve communications and speed up the process of integrating the team.

East Sussex County Council awarded its long-term highways maintenance contract, valued at around £15m per annum, to May Gurney during summer 2005.

The contract, which is branded East Sussex Highways, was awarded to May Gurney on the basis of a combination of quality and service - and the company's strong reputation for delivering through partnerships, using locally based services.

The work covers all road maintenance and new construction work on East Sussex County Council's highways - including road safety, traffic calming, surfacing, surface dressing, white lining and winter gritting.

Since September 2005 - when the contract commenced - the team has been working from six different locations.

Dale Foden, the partnership's Deputy Network Manager, explains the thinking behind the move: "Co-location has been our top priority since the start of the new contract with May Gurney. The East Sussex Highways partnership is built on an integrated team - and achieving integration is difficult without co-location.

"The data link has been beefed up and a new server is due shortly - and the phone system is being upgraded to a voice over IP system."

Continuity of service was maintained throughout, and Neil Oxenbury, Contract Manager, praised the team behind the move. "Dale and his team have worked tirelessly to complete this ambitious project," he said. "This has allowed us to focus on operations throughout the upheaval, and complete the client's budget at the end of the year. We are now looking forward to establishing East Sussex Highways as a truly integrated team and will soon begin to reap the benefits of this approach."

Phase 2, of the project, which is due to be completed in July, will see the team also occupy refurbished old offices that are linked to the new building.
