Rangers ready to blitz roads

A new service to improve the street scene across West Sussex was officially launched on 14 April.

West Sussex County Council’s Highway Rangers service comprises three teams carrying out small scale but essential maintenance work. The service is going countywide after a successful pilot scheme.

The Highway Ranger service is operated by us as part of the West Sussex Alliance, which is responsible for looking after more than 5,000 miles of roads and footpaths across the county.

Lieutenant Colonel Tex Pemberton, West Sussex Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “The ‘Rangers’ will carry out improvements they spot themselves on their travels as well as acting as our eyes and ears, listening out for problems people raise.

“Although we inspect our roads very regularly, they will also be expected to report issues outside their remit such as potholes, litter problems and graffiti.”
