Tex's Rangers hit the road

The 'Highway Rangers' - a new team launched by West Sussex County Council and provided by May Gurney- has hit the road.

The two man crew and their distinctive vehicle will become a familiar sight as they set about improving the street scene in four areas chosen to take part in a pilot scheme - Worthing, Adur, Chanctonbury and some parts of South Mid Sussex.

"If the pilot is a success I see it as the first step towards introducing this service right across West Sussex."

Lieutenant Colonel Tex Pemberton

They will spend a week at a time in various areas carrying out small scale but essential tasks including: clearing vegetation overhanging paths and roads; removing weeds from pavements; hedge trimming; cleaning signs and removing illegal ones; clearing debris from gullies and culverts; and carrying out minor repairs to signs and other street furniture.

The Rangers will also keep their eyes peeled for more serious potential hazards requiring attention from the West Sussex Highway Alliance between the Council and May Gurney.

Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Lieutenant Colonel Tex Pemberton said: "If the pilot is a success I see it as the first step towards introducing this service right across West Sussex.

"The Rangers will be able to react to issues raised by residents and have a real impact on improving the street scene.

"We are also looking at using the Rangers as part of the 'cut the clutter' initiative we have launched to remove street signs that are simply unnecessary, providing this does not mean a safety risk.

"Residents in the four areas chosen for the pilot scheme will be able to submit requests for work to be carried out by the Highway Rangers. Providing the request comes within the scope of the Rangers it will be programmed to take place as soon as possible."
