More good RIDDOR news

There's more good news on the safety front, with May Gurney Highway Services having recently achieved one million man hours of work and eight months without a RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) incident.

In addition Highway Services' AFR (Accident Frequency Rate) has improved from 0.7 in August 2006 to 0.28 as of now.

May Gurney's innovative behavioural safety programme, MAD (Making a Difference) is being credited with the company's spectacular improvement in safety performance. During 2006, the company's overall AFR fell - from 0.43 at the outset to 0.24 at the close.

"The Highway Services record is a tremendous achievement."

In addition, May Gurney Rail Services recently completed two million man-hours without a RIDDOR - which equates to almost 15 months accident-free working.

In September 2006, the company's civil engineering business notched up half a million working hours and 17 months RIDDOR free working - and Ayton Products is closing in on two years without a RIDDOR.

"The Highway Services record is a tremendous achievement, due in no small part to a high near miss reporting rate," says Mike Stott, May Gurney's Safety Health and Environment Director. "Near miss reporting, which is encouraged in our MAD programme, has major benefits.

"First, it shows we welcome any information about safety, which makes people feel much more comfortable asking questions without fear of ridicule or the sack. We can then act on any information received.

"RIDDORs are a tiny proportion of the whole safety picture, and as such do not give us much of a steer as to what is going wrong.

"Highway Services has 140 near misses for every RIDDOR - knowing about them enables us to be far more proactive in improving safety."
