Lighting up Essex - again!

A new £15m street lighting contract has further strengthened May Gurney's already close alliance with Essex County Council.

The new contract means that Cartledge (May Gurney's street lighting business) is now the third largest street lighting provider in the UK, with responsibility for 370,000 lights.

This stand-alone contract for the maintenance and installation of 140,000 units comes hot on the heels of a highways maintenance contract award to May Gurney by the county council.

The new contract takes effect on 1 April and will run for three years, with a possible two-year extension.

Prior to the award, Cartledge was responsible for the maintenance and installation of 67,000 lighting units in the north of the county. The new contract doubles the company's street lighting work in Essex, and will be worth £5m per annum.

Councillor Rodney Bass, Cabinet Member for Highways & Transportation at Essex County Council said: "One of the key reasons we selected Cartledge is because of their excellent service delivery in the north of the county and this new contract means that we can extend this to cover all of our residents. Moreover, there are obvious efficiency benefits in using Cartledge because they are a part of May Gurney."

Graham Cartledge, Director, says: "We are really delighted at the news of this win, especially as it is a stand-alone contract for twice as many units as the current contract.

"We're achieving over 98.8% 'lights-on' in north Essex and our goal is to extend this excellent service level right across the county."
