Praise for West Sussex Highways

Working as part of the West Sussex Highways alliance, May Gurney has received praise for the way it has responded to two incidents in recent weeks.

"Pass on my thanks and appreciation to everyone involved for their prompt and professional handling of the situation. Most impressive!"

A member of the public was most impressed with the way in which a potentially dangerous pothole was dealt with - in around two hours. Here's how he summarised the incident:

"On a visit to Haywards Heath on 10 January at about 7:30-8.00pm my wife and I telephoned your general switchboard to report a pothole in the road, which we believed to be particularly hazardous to traffic.

"Our call was picked up promptly and we were immediately transferred to your highways section. They, in turn, picked up the call promptly and extracted the necessary information from us as to where the pothole was located. They then said they would seek to deal with the problem right away.

"Within the hour we received a call from highway staff stating that they were about to deal with the problem. On our return home about two hours later, we happily noted that the pothole had been made reasonably safe.

"I would be grateful if you would pass on my thanks and appreciation to everyone involved - from the switchboard to the repair crew - for their prompt and professional handling of the situation. Most impressive!"

The second incident took place on Sunday 4 December when exceptionally strong winds and flooding wreaked havoc across West Sussex. More than 140 trees came down across the county.

"May Gurney coped admirably with the problems."

Mike Egleton

West Sussex Highways' Drayton Depot dealt with 61 call outs for flooding and 53 incidents relating to trees - and the Clapham and Broadbridge Heath depots were similarly stretched in their efforts to make the county safe.

Mike Egleton, Highway Network Manager, described May Gurney's efforts as follows: The strong winds on Sunday caused us a number of problems... speaking with Ian Brett, our Duty Superintendent, May Gurney coped admirably with the problems."

His colleague, Stuart Smith, echoed this endorsement: "I am pleased to report that May Gurney dealt with all incidences efficiently. I would echo what Mike said - May Gurney has done a sterling job this weekend and there are a few tired eyes around the place."
