Improve predictability - the challenge for transport professionals

Improving traffic throughput by increasing 'predictability' was one of the key topics discussed at an important transport industry conference last month, which was sponsored by May Gurney.

The Traffic Management & Regional Transport Funding Conference, which was organised by New Civil Engineer, was held in London on 17 January.

The conference set out to 'deliver solutions for the biggest challenges in transport planning and infrastructure'.

Delegates were updated on major national, regional and local changes in transport planning and strategy. Topics included regional transport funding, congestion charging and road pricing.

"There's a strong drive from central government to improve the quality of local authority transport planning,' explains Chris Slater, May Gurney Highway Service's Business Strategy Manager. "Much of the focus of the conference was about managing accidents and road works more effectively to improve 'predictability' and thus increase throughput on highways."

Highway Services' MD Peter Batts was part of a distinguished panel assembled for the event's Q&A session. Much of the discussion centred on the need for roadworks to be managed in a consistent manner across the country.

This was the second time in three months that Peter Batts has participated in a high profile Q&A session - the first was at the Civils 2005 Transport & Infrastructure Conference in November 2005.
