Groundbreaking solution to sticky problem
May Gurney is playing an important role in a recently launched scheme under which old cooking oil will be used to generate electricity.
"This service is a real breakthrough"
Ian Monson, Norfolk County Council |
The scheme - believed to be the first in the country - is taking place in Norfolk, where residents are being encouraged to take their used vegetable oil to one of 18 recycling points. The oil will then be taken to the Living Fuels' plant near Thetford to be recycled, purified and converted into clean, renewable energy.
The 18 recycling centres are operated and managed by Norfolk Community Recycling Services (NCRS), a wholly owned subsidiary of May Gurney, on behalf of Norfolk County Council.
Richard Alexander, Commercial Manager for NCRS, is spearheading the initiative, which is being heralded as an environmentally friendly answer to the tricky problem of disposing of greasy household waste that can become a pollutant.
It has been calculated that 225,000 tonnes of used cooking oil is thrown away every year in the UK, and Norfolk's share would be about 3,500 tonnes. If this is all collected and refined, the resulting biofuel could generate more than 13,000-megawatt hours of electricity per year - the equivalent to the annual average consumption of around 2,200 households.
Ian Monson, Cabinet Member for Environment and Waste, said: "This service is a real breakthrough, the latest in a series of improvements at Norfolk's recycling centres to make it easier for the public to recycle even more.
Householders often ask what to do with used cooking oil and I'm sure many will welcome the new service."
"This is further evidence of our commitment to continually improve service to the county's residents"
Steve Longdon, May Gurney |
Steve Longdon, General Manager, May Gurney Waste Services, added: "This is a another example of an important additional service that we have provided since being appointed to deliver the recycling contract on behalf of Norfolk County Council - and is further evidence of our commitment to continually improve service to the county's residents.
"We're really excited about this and are looking to roll it out across similar contracts that we hold in other parts of the country."
